JUST AN IDEA – JEAN JULLIEN
Designer, painter, and sculptor, originally from Nantes, now based in Paris, Jean Jullien gives life to 2-dimensional characters whose contours he cuts out. The paper people emerge from his books to wander into the real world, sometimes even the artist’s daily life: one man lounges on a huge terrace, another hugs a tree, or intrudes in the vast hall of a department store. Each escapes to go on an adventure instead of watching it passively pass by. This book retraces all the installations dedicated to paper people by Jean Jullien. We perceive the playful and poetic dimension of his work.
Jean Jullien (b. 1983) is a French artist living and working in Paris. Originally from Nantes, he graduated from Central Saint Martins in 2008 and the Royal College of Art in 2010. Jullien’s creative output ranges from painting, illustration, installations, photography, and video to costumes, books, posters, and clothing. He has shown work around the world with museums and galleries in Paris, London, Brussels, Los Angeles, New York, San Francisco, Berlin, Tokyo, Seoul, Melbourne, Singapore, and more. His work appears in The New York Times, The New Yorker, The Guardian, National Geographic, SZ Magazin, Télérama, and more, and he has collaborated with RCA Records, The Connaught, Colette, Amnesty International, Le Coq Sportif, Jardin des Plantes (Nantes), Hotel Amour, Champion USA, Salomon, and Petit Bateau, among other global brands. In 2016, he launched Nounou with Jae Huh, a Korean-based label producing a range of items, including clothing, home, and tableware.
Jean has published numerous books with acclaimed publishing houses, including teNeues, Walker Books, Comme des Giants, and Hate Press. In 2022, his first retrospective monograph was published by Phaidon Press, alongside his retrospective exhibition at DDP Museum in Seoul. Recently, in June 2023, his first European institutional solo museum exhibition opened at MIMA in Brussels. Later that year, he was asked to participate in the triennial exhibition at the National Gallery of Victoria in Melbourne, with a large-scale immersive installation for children.
